What are dental veneers and when are they used?

Dental veneers are very thin coverings that encase teeth to provide a brighter, more even smile. This procedure is used for primarily cosmetic purposes and can effectively correct a host of flaws including:

  • Teeth with discolorations that don't respond well to whitening treatments
  • Teeth that have chipped or broken
  • Teeth that are worn down, uneven or irregularly shaped due to grinding or other causes
  • Uneven spaces between teeth

Dental veneers bond to the teeth, creating a permanent solution for any of the above issues. They can alter the color, size and shape of the teeth for a more even, beautiful smile.

There are two different types of dental veneers that are commonly used in Orange County. Porcelain dental veneers are the preferred choice for aesthetic reasons because they reflect light in a similar fashion to natural teeth and they are able to resist stains effectively. Resin veneers may also be desirable because the material is thinner than porcelain and less tooth has to be removed prior to application. However, they are not quite as effective at mirroring the appearance of the natural teeth.

How is the procedure done?

The first step in dental veneers is to prepare the teeth for the application process. The dentist will take x-rays to make sure the patient is a good candidate for the procedure. The next step is to file the teeth to remove a small amount of enamel from the surface. In some cases, a local anesthetic is offered to make the patient more comfortable during the procedure.

An impression is made of the teeth that will guide the process of creating the veneer. Once the impression is completed, it is sent to a dental lab where the veneer can be constructed. It usually takes two or three weeks to create a custom veneer. In the meantime, a patient may be provided with a temporary veneer to wear so the treated teeth are protected until the regular veneer comes in.

After the veneer is completed, the patient returns to the dentist's office for a fitting. If the veneer proves to fit perfectly over the teeth, the dentist will then use a bonding agent to affix the veneer to the current teeth. A light beam activates the agent to ensure a good, strong bond. Excess agent is removed and the teeth are polished up to show off to the world.

How long do veneers last?

Most dental veneers can last as long as five to 10 years before requiring replacement. The time may go even longer if the veneers are properly cared for. This means daily brushing or flossing and regular trips to the dentist for cleaning and maintenance.
