What are partial dentures and when are they recommended?

Partial dentures are generally recommended to patients who have lost some, but not all, of their teeth. The appliance consists of a series of false teeth connected to metal holders, known as precision attachments. The entire unit is held together with a pink plastic base that fits comfortably behind the teeth. Partial dentures are removable, making it easy to clean the appliance and gums. Dentures can be an affordable option to a permanent bridge.

Are partial dentures difficult to wear?

Most patients find that partial dentures feel large and bulky at first. However, it only takes a matter of weeks before patients become accustomed to the appliance. It also takes some practice to get used to placing the appliance into the mouth and removing it for cleaning. The majority of patients find that partial dentures are fairly easy to wear and maintain once they get used to having them.

Missing teeth can affect the way patients eat and speak. Patients have trouble chewing food. In some cases, missing teeth can affect the way words are enunciated. A partial denture can make it easier to chew food and communicate clearly once again. There are a few food restrictions for denture wearers, such as sticky or hard foods that could cause the appliance to become dislodged or damage it.

How are partial dentures made?

The creation of partial dentures usually takes a number of weeks to complete. First, the dentist will take measurements and make impressions of the jaw line to ensure the partial dentures will fit properly. Samples are then made from these impressions, which the patient will need to try on to find the best fit. Once the best sample is determined, a permanent denture appliance will be created. This is usually done at a dental laboratory and then shipped back to the dentist's office.

When the partial denture arrives, the patient is brought back in for the final fitting and instructions on wearing and caring for the dentures. It is not unusual for the patient to have to return a few times so that necessary adjustments can be made to the appliance. Some patients experience localized areas of soreness during this time as the partial dentures rub or press on certain areas of the gum until the final fit is in place.

Will partial dentures need to be adjusted?

Over time, the aging process can result in minor changes to the jaw line. This can cause partial dentures to become loose, which can lead to a variety of problems and discomfort. It is important to have partial dentures checked by the dentist on a regular basis so that adjustments can be made as necessary.

How are partial dentures maintained?

Dentures must be cleaned daily using tools specifically designed for this purpose. When not worn, dentures should be soaked in a solution or plain water to keep them moist. Caring for dentures properly will ensure they last for a much longer time.
